Letters from the Troops issue #6

Paul • Fri 21 of Oct, 2011 (17:25 UTC)
Paul,
My fellow Marines and I wanted to take a moment to thank you and the volunteers at MooreMart who recently sent our unit over 100 care packages! We are currently assigned to a FOB in a very remote region of Afghanistan and have none of the amenities enjoined by our brothers in arms in the rear areas. I cannot tell you how excited we were when we returned from a mission and found the care packages on our bunks, it was like Christmas in September! Receiving care packages from people we have never met that contained everything we could have asked for was incredible and helped reaffirm our belief that we are not alone out here and that we are not forgotten!
The school supplies and soccer balls and whiffle bats are a godsend in that it allowed us to make a connection with the local children which helps us cement our position here with the village elders as they now see us in a different light due to our interest in their children.
Also, I would be remiss if I did not thank you for…

Letters from the Troops issue #5

Paul • Mon 29 of Aug, 2011 (12:56 UTC)

Dear Mr. Moore,

I am the Commanding Officer of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter (CGC) WRANGELL (WPB 1332). CGC WRANGELL is currently deployed to the Arabian Gulf in support of the U.S. Coast Guard Patrol Forces Southwest Asia as well as the U,S. Navy's Fifth Fleet. I am writing you to thank you for the thoughtful care packages that you sent to the crew.

We have a crew of twenty two Coastguardsmen assigned to our cutter. As you are probably aware, every member of the crew has to leave family and friends behind for a one year tour. Also, as you know, the Middle East is a harsh and inherently dangerous operating environment. I briefly mention the challenges of our current assignment not to complain, but rather so you understand how important your care packages were to us. The candy, the snacks, the cards, and the words of encouragement brightened the entire crew's day. Knowing that there are people out there thinking of us and supporting us keeps us going when times are tough.

I wan…
